The concerto was written in 1953 and commissioned by the “Asociación Amigos de la Música” from Buenos Aires. It was premiered by the association’s orchestra on July 6, 1954, with Ljerko Spiller as soloist and Jean Martinon conducting. Castro writes in a neoclassical style, and composes the concerto in three movements, using the current Fast-Slow-Fast structure. Initiale is a short, only 5 minutes, rarely performed piece by Pierre Boulez that he composed for the Houston Symphony Orchestra, in 1987. The instruments, two trombones, two horns and two trumpets, are symmetrically distributed around the tuba, allowing for echo and spatialization effects that the composer of “Répons” likes to consider. May 12, 2023 credit: Nadine Duval Victors from the North After three Covid postponements the European Championship for Wind Orchestras finally landed in Amiens (FR). The artistic level of all participants was incredibly high this year, but the championship title ultimately went to Musikkforeningen Nidarholm from Norway. With an excellent interpretation of the test piece ‘Mouvements Frénétiques’ by Alexandre Kosmicki and an outstanding performance of ‘Frozen Cathedral’ by John Mackey they moved many to tears. The top three was completed by the Koninklijke Harmonie van Peer (BE) and L’Orchestre d'Harmonie de la Région Centre (FR). The full results can [...]

In 2023 we commemorate 60th anniversary of his death. Written in 1950, it uses material from a previously conceived composition, the burlesque concertino for trumpet and wind ensemble from 1931. It was premiered 72 years ago, in Stuttgart, Germany, on April 21, 1951, at the South German Broadcasting Hall, during the Musiktage Stuttgart, with the South German Broadcasting Orchestra under Hans-Müller-Kray. Carnival was premiered by the Sun Fredonia Wind Ensemble conducted by Paula Holcomb with Nadina Mackie Jackson, bassoon soloist at SUNY Fredonia, on April 30, 2022. The concerto has a duration of 23 minutes, but it is also possible to perform a shorter version of 13 minutes, which omits some sections. That is the version presented here.
