After backgrounds about the Chinese characters by Joseph Cheung,
composer Simon Yau Yuen Hing speaks about his composition ‘The Story of Cao Xueqin’.
Cao Xueqin was a Chinese writer during the Qing Dynasty and he is best known as the author of “Dream of the Red Chamber”, one of the 4 great classical novels of Classic Chinese literature.
He wrote this famous novel in a suburb called Xi-Shan (West Mountain) as his home, near Beijing. The background of the novel was in Jiang-Ning (the old name of the current city Nanjing).
The composition was commissioned by the Beijing Culture Development Foundation.

Edo is the ancient name of the city of Tokyo. The composition is divided into five movements in arch form. Each movement takes its title from a print from the ‘One Hundred Views’.
