Sir Michael Kemp Tippett’s TRIUMPH is our Composition of the Week.

Triumph was written in 1992 and was commissioned by a consortium of U.S college bands, and first performed in 1993.

The work calls for a large Wind Ensemble, including double bassoon, soprano saxophone, 6 horn parts, 2 euphonium and 2 tuba parts. It has a duration of about 15 minutes, and it is available on rental at Schott Verlag.

Sir Michael Tippett was an English composer who rose to prominence after the Second World War. During his lifetime he was ranked, together with Benjamin Britten, as one of the leading British composers of the 20th century.

Tippett’s production is large, even though he first accepted to publish in his early 30s, destroying the complete output of his younger years.

His best-known works are the oratorio “A Child of Our Time”, the orchestral “Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli” and the opera “The Midsummer Marriage”.

His works for winds includes “Mosaic” (Orchestral Winds, first movement of his Concerto for Orchestra); “Preludium”; “Fanfare Nr 1”; “Festal Brass with Blues” and “The Wolf Trap Fanfare” all for different Brass and Percussion instrumentations.
