Initiated by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) in 2011, the International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music has nurtured many conducting talents over the years. This year, the HKCO will join The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in organizing the global event to further the objectives of promoting Chinese orchestral music, enhancing artistic exchange and bridging the geographical divide. We aim to offer opportunities for budding conductors through the competition, and to nourish constant development of traditional Chinese music culture through supporting large-scale, modern Chinese music performances.

More than 150 entries have been submitted from all over the world including Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, Austria and England. The competition provides a platform for participants to learn and exchange experiences of conducting large-scale, modern Chinese music performances. It is not only considered a rewarding initiative to groom young talents in conducting, but also a mark in the development of Chinese orchestral music.

“This conducting competition for Chinese music offered an exceptional learning and training opportunity for all contestants. From wielding the baton to communicating with the musicians of the Orchestra, to stepping onto the conductor’s podium and feeling the tension of having all eyes on one’s every single move, it has been a most valuable experience for aspiring conductors throughout,” said Yan Huichang – Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for Life, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

We are now calling for conductors and students to join this international conducting competition. Undoubtedly, this will be a golden opportunity for young conductors to enhance and exchange musical knowledge among competitors, as well as to discover the beauty of Chinese orchestral music. It will be grateful if you can help us to share the news to your students and members.
