“Pianissimo” for Wind Band, Piano and Electronics by Portuguese composer Carlos Caires is our Composition of the Week.
Pianissimo was written in 2017 and has a duration of about 12’.
The electronic part consists of two sound files that should be triggered at two specific moments of the piece, using the Max/MSP patch provided. This patch is very simple to operate. It has to be triggered in sync with the conductor, who is equipped with an “in-ear device” to follow a click track.

Carlos Caires has written music for solo, chamber groups, medium and large orchestra, most works featuring tape or live electronics.
He is a full-time professor at Escola Superior de Musica de Lisboa and researcher at CESEM (Centro de Estudos de Sociologia e Estética Musical) and CESEM-IPL chair.
His main research topics are music composition, theory and analysis, electronic and mixed music, programming and performance in Max/MSP as well as computer assisted composition.
Carlos Caires was born in Lisbon, studied composition in his hometown before receiving a doctoral scholarship to study with Horacio Vaggione in Paris. His works have received several awards in Portugal: the Joly Braga Santos Prize in 1994 for “Al niente”, the Claudio Carneyro Prize in 1994 for “Wordpainting”, and ACARTE Prize in 1998 for “Retábulo–Melodrama”.
His music is performed in several European countries, as well as in China and the USA.
