CUR? (2008)

Jukka-Pekka Lehto

Our composition of the Week is CUR? (Why?) from Finnish composer Jukka-Pekka Lehto (1958).

This work obtained the 1st prize in the 2009’s edition of the International Composition Competition “Ciutat de Betera”, in Spain.

Cur? Is a three-movement 20-minute-long work written for symphonic wind orchestra, but also very suitable for the wind ensemble. Besides the standard wind orchestra instrumentation, this Grade 6 challenging work calls for a Contrabass Clarinet, Contrabassoon, Soprano Saxophone, as well as piano.

Jukka-Pekka Lehto obtained his degree in military music from the Finnish Navy Band School in Turku, studied flute at the Turku Conservatory and graduated in music education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Lehto is currently a flutist of the Pori Philharmonic Orchestra.

Jukka-Pekka gradually oriented himself to a modern and expressionistic musical language. Since 1999 he is a member of the Finnish Composers’ Society.  Lehto`s compositions have been performed in all the continents (except Antarctica!) and they have received international awards, such as the 1st prize in Spain 2009 (international composition competition “Ciutat de Betera”) ,1st prize in Riga, Latvia (“Windstream 2014”) and 1st prize in the 2018 EDR-Foundation competition for piano music. Lately, Lehto has been also writing for symphonic orchestra, chamber and vocal ensembles. He has presented flute clinics in the USA and is a veteran attendee of the WASBE Conference and the Midwest-Chicago.
