ANNIVERSARY CONCERT 30 YEARS Symphony No. 1 THE LORD OF THE RINGS ROYAL SYMPHONIC BAND OF THE BELGIAN GUIDES
Date: March 15th, 2018
ANNIVERSARY CONCERT 30 YEARS Symphony No. 1 THE LORD OF THE RINGS
ROYAL SYMPHONIC BAND OF THE BELGIAN GUIDES
The 30 Years Anniversary Concert of Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings by Johan de Meij will take place Thursday March 15th in Theater De Domijnen in Sittard, performed by The Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides (‘De Gidsen’), conducted by their former director and honorary guest conductor Norbert Nozy.
The event is organized by the Koninklijke Harmonie van Thorn (nicknamed ‘De Bokken’), the orchestra where Norbert Nozy recently retired as chief conductor. The current conductor of De Gidsen,Yves Segers, organized a series of guest appearances with De Bokken van Thorn in 2017. It was Pierre Kuijpers, born and raised in Thorn, who carried out The Lord of the Rings for the first time in The Netherlands with The Dutch Royal Military Band (KMK).
The world premiere of Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings was exactly 30 years ago (March 15th, 1988), performed by De Gidsen, and conducted by Norbert Nozy. The concert on March 15th, 2018 will be an exact copy of the 1988 concert: same line-up, same conductor and the same program.Johan de Meij, who resides in New York since 2008, will be present in Sittard during the performance, as well as many representatives of the Dutch music scene.
In addition to Symphony No. 1, the program includes the Overture Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz, Introduction, Theme and Variations for clarinet by Gioacino Rossini, with soloist Eva Saliën and Dance Funambulesque by Jules Strens.
It is unknown how many times The Lord of the Rings has been performed over the past 30 years, but it must be in the thousands. Johan de Meij still receives invitations from all over the world to conduct or discuss his musical portrayal of the epic Trilogy of Tolkien. February 25th he is invited to conduct the US Marine Band ‘The President’s Own’ in Washington, and September 29th Johan will conduct the symphonic version with the North Netherlands Orchestra (NNO). Symphony No. 1, his very first composition for wind orchestra, is still a bestseller after thirty years.
The concert will be hosted by Ab Nieuwdorp, presenter of the radio program “De Klassieken” on Dutch Radio NPO 4, including a pre-concert talk with Johan de Meij and Norbert Nozy.
